A calm space, for you to be heard

Perhaps you're used to coping, achieving, looking after others or just striving to do things well. You might be feeling the pressure of other people's expectations, whilst managing the demands of family, relationships or career, and wondering where your own needs fit in? There can be times when "keeping it all together" becomes too much, but you don't have to be falling apart to benefit from support. Counselling offers you a protected space to pause, explore what you're feeling and begin to understand yourself more fully. You can read more about my approach and session options below.

person centered therapy

A warm, thoughtful approach

I am a qualified Person-Centred Counsellor and Registered member of the BACP, with experience supporting clients in NHS and charitable sector settings. I come from a medical profession background, giving me thorough experience in managing confidentiality and sensitive information in a safe and ethical way. My therapy approach is calm, thoughtful and empathic. I offer a relationship in which you can feel heard and accepted as you are, whilst we work together in exploring what matters most to you. Our sessions will not simply involve nodding and listening; I will be actively engaged in the process, offering observations, asking thoughtful questions and sometimes gently challenging assumptions or patterns. In this way, we will work towards a clearer understanding of your feelings, needs and opportunities.

Common questions

How long is a typical course of therapy?+

It varies. Some clients find six to twelve sessions sufficient; others benefit from longer-term work; there is no upper limit. We'll discuss your preferences at the outset and review it regularly.

How much does it cost?+

Each 50 minute session costs £65. The overall cost of therapy depends how long you wish to continue for; some clients switch from weekly sessions to fortnightly when continuing longer term, which helps spread the cost.

Is this counselling suitable for me?+

Person-centred counselling is a flexible approach which can usually work for a wide range of people and issues. However all counsellors are individuals and some may be a better match for you than others, depending on their personality, specialist areas and facilities. You may wish to research other types of counselling, read "About me" on my web pages, or book an initial phone consultation so we can talk through any queries.

What do I have to commit to?+

You are welcome to book a free initial phone consultation with no commitment. When you book a session, there is a 24 hour minimum cancellation period, so you commit to paying the session fee unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the session. There is no long term tie in. You are expected to attend regularly (usually a fixed weekly slot) whilst continuing, but you are always free to pause or stop when you want to.

Is it confidential?+

Yes - with specific exceptions. Confidentiality is taken seriously. Your personal details and what you share in sessions will be kept in strict confidence, within the standard ethical and legal limitations of the profession. We will discuss this in the first session.

What if I am not happy with the counselling?+

Counselling is a different experience for each person and with each counsellor. You will probably get a sense quite quickly of whether or not your counsellor is a good fit for you. If not, it is fine to be honest. I regularly check in with clients about how it is going and I welcome any feedback. There is no pressure to continue sessions if you feel it is not right for you. As a BACP registered therapist, my clients may also directly contact the BACP via its website with any concerns or complaints.

Do you offer child counselling?+

No, I do not have the required special training for counselling children. I work with adults from 18 years old.

Do you take counselling students?+

I welcome counselling students as clients; I offer a limited number of spaces at a concessionary rate for students. As an individual private practitioner I am not able to offer student training placements.
